Decline in New Home Sales Lead to More Custom Home Remodels

(PRWEB) September 18, 2007 -- With the recent downturn in the housing market and the mortgage crisis, many families who were looking for a new home are now considering remodeling. Builders are working on fewer new housing units, with the U.S. Commerce Department reporting on Aug. 16 that housing starts declined 6.1 percent in July, the slowest pace since January 1997.

Just because a family can not afford a new home, it doesn't mean they can't create the home of their dreams, according to Shawn Bowman, owner of California Dream Builders, a Silicon Valley construction company specializing in custom home remodels. His company has worked on projects as large as 8,800 foot estates to kitchen remodels in smaller homes.

"The key for the owner is determining exactly what they want in their 'dream home,'" Bowman said. "The key for the contractor is listening to the homeowner and creating their dream."

With the popularity of home improvement shows, many homeowners come to Bowman with ideas he has not seen yet.

"A good contractor can totally change the look of your home, inside and out," Bowman said. "It may be you want to add a room or change the function of some of the rooms. Many home remodels I see simply involve modernizing a home with the latest in appliances and style."

The bottom line for most families is price and often a remodel is cheaper than buying a new home. But price should not be the only factor, Bowman said.

"Make sure you use a licensed contractor," Bowman said. "There are many dishonest contractors who will take advantage of homeowners and turn their dreams into nightmares. Doing some research now will save you potential headaches and maybe financial loss later."
